Add a zoom function (yes, I said zoom. So sue me)

Status: Completed

Now available in LabVIEW 2023 Q3

Add a slider on the toolbar which would allow changing the zoom level on the diagram. This should also be controllable more easily (for example, by using shift + mouse wheel scroll).

Personally, I want this less for zooming out and more for zooming in. It's sometimes convenient to have a larger display of a specific area.

I know some people feel that a zoom is a terrible idea because it will encourage people to create huge diagrams. Personally, I doubt that (since you can't work on zoomed out code and zooming out and in repeatedly isn't that convenient), but I don't mind if people do that. It's their code (as long as I don't have to work on it later).

If people really insist, this can also be prevented by setting the maximum value of the slider to 1, so that people can't zoom out, but I doubt this would have any value.

The zoom should snap to 1 when you get near it and should center on the mouse cursor.

In my point of view, the argument that zoom would jeopardize the code quality is a pure nonsense. Almost every at least a bit similar application has this feature from the beginnig and it never caused any trouble. I am generally very unsatisfied with the labview medieval graphics (the wires positioning, clean up function, aligning the objects on the front panel,...) and the lack of zoom is only the last straw. And as previously mentioned, the Ultra HD monitors make this situation more and more critical. I sort of hoped that Labview 2016 will improve the situation but unfortunately, it still looks the same.

While zoom is not in 2016, please note that this feature is now "In Development." Smiley Happy

People can try it out in the Next Gen Technology Preview (which use vector graphics, so that works better).

Status changed to: Completed

Available in LabVIEW NXG 1.0. Front panel and block diagram zooming are both supported via Ctrl-Scroll, or the 'Zoom level' ring in the toolbar.

If this idea is marked as completed, does it mean that we will have to wait for NXG to merge with LabVIEW in order to have zoom in LabVIEW? When will that happen approximately?

What do you mean by "merge"? The current plan is that LabVIEW and LabVIEW NXG will always be separate products. There are no plans to implement zoom in the classic LabVIEW product. National Instruments will be marking ideas as Complete on the idea exchange if they become implemented in either LabVIEW or LabVIEW NXG.

From http://www.electronicdesign.com/test-measurement/what-s-difference-between-labview-2017-and-labview-...

LabVIEW NXG v1 (or LabVIEW NXG 2017) does not incorporate all of the features of LabVIEW 2017. It was just too difficult to incorporate all the changes that NXG developers came up with into LabVIEW 2017 while maintaining compatibility. LabVIEW NXG will be used by new LabVIEW developers, as well as by existing LabVIEW developers working on new projects. This is a migration path to LabVIEW NXG but developers need to keep in mind that some features are not available in LabVIEW NXG, at this point. The long-term goal is to make this migration totally seamless. At that point, LabVIEW NXG will become the only incarnation of LabVIEW. Migration of projects from LabVIEW NXG to LabVIEW 2017 is not supported.

The merging of LabVIEW back to a single platform will probably not occur next year, though it is a priority. In the meantime, look for more frequent updates of LabVIEW NXG, as well as the incorporation of even more new features. Some features will be rolled back into LabVIEW 2017 and its subsequent versions until the platforms reunite.

Those paragraphs weren't written by NI... I'm not sure what source material the author was drawing on. The last sentence should be rewritten as follows:

Some features will be rolled back into LabVIEW 2017 and its subsequent versions until support for the existing platform is dropped.

Eventually, what is LV NXG will be the only LabVIEW. That will take years. This feature is Complete because it is in NXG. Merge is not one of the features that will be rolled back into 2017 or its subsequent versions.

Can the Completed status tag be updated to show the version of LabVIEW for which an idea has been completed (LabVIEW, NXG, or both)?

What good can come from someone submitting an idea for LabVIEW and having it completed in NXG? Especially if LabVIEW will remain for years and years and probably much more longer than NI wants or anticipated...

Ideas should be categorized. LabVIEW, NXG or both and that the status should reflect that.
