Allow more information-gathering tools when on a non-editable VI

Status: New

I'm looking at a clone. I don't see why I would have to ctrl-M to get an editable version to do such things as:

- get the contextual menu up on the VI's icon to 'find all instances'

- get help on a VI that's on the clone's block diagram

- open or find all instances of a typedef via its contextual menu (the typedef being on the clone's front panel or back panel)

Yup. Working with clones is harder than it should be, and yet any modern application is full of them.

Kudos for any idea that makes working with clones fun.

I think this idea applies to all locked vi:s, not only clones. I've had on my list to write something about that, but it's better to keep this idea going. May I suggest that 'clone' is changed to 'vi' in the title?

To add to the list of things I'd like to be able to do in a locked vi:

- Copy elements. Just in the same way as we can copy from an unlocked vi.

To make this possible we need more tools than the 'move hand' (can't recall its proper name), we also need the select arrow. Maybe some further indication that the vi is locked will be necessary, like showing all the tools in the tool bar but as disabled and greyed out.

Oh, right. I don't usually run into locked VIs other than clones, but them too.

I do not, however, see how to edit the OP.

Locked VIs, passworded VIs, VIs in run mode, clones, etc. Seem to be similarly limited.

Limitations must exist so information gathering from a passworded VI is limited (yes, I know... ;)), else what good is the password. Maybe passworded VIs need a different set of limitations. Do they?

Sometimes the barriers are leaky. For example in a "run mode" VI, we can no longer right-click on the icon to view the VI properties, but we can still get to the same properties from the menu.
