Close vi from block diagram

Status: New

While some ideas like this suggest that we should be able to open block diagrams without opening the front panels, and others suggest that we let go of the front panel as the primary part of a vi, the front panels will probably be around for quite some while yet. But the block diagram is where we primarily work, and closing a vi requires clicks on two different windows. Using ctrl+w twice is not working since the second last window is not always the FP (if it's your very large project this may be annoying).

Let us have the possibility to close the entire vi including FP from the BD by ctrl+click the panel close 'x'. Similarly, remap ctrl+shift+w to close the entire vi.

What I do today is a Ctrl+E, Ctrl+W combo, which brings the FP to the front and closes it. Because E and W are near each other, I find it easy enough.

I found myself thinging exactly the same thing tst, it's what I tend to do, unless I am closing everything down but still want a splash screen, then it's a ctrl-w fest.

Why not combining both the front panel and the block diagram in the same window, separating them using tabs. The number of windows would then be reduced to half. By default the block diagram could be shown.

I tend to work with the mouse quite a lot for these operations, a little bit depending on the layout of the keyboard I'm at (mac layout is a wrist-bender for ctrl+W). But i open the vi:s by clicking, so a lot of the time I close them by clicking.

When it comes to closing many vi:s but not all the "All windows..." (current ctrl+shift+W) is pretty handy when I remember to use it (although I tend to close the utility itself intead of the vi:s).

Why not? It has its pros and cons. The idea comes up every once in a while. It was prototyped for LabVIEW 8.0 and got totally rejected in alpha testing... runs into problems when you're trying to size a panel like a dialog but you want a maximized block diagram. But it comes back because the pros are so tempting for the decrease of window management. Perhaps someday we'll get it right.

In the meantime, I'll throw my kudos on this "ctrl+click on the [X] idea".
