Get rid of the "Bell" when opening the icon editor from the block diagram window

Status: Completed

Available in LabVIEW 2019 and later.

If you double click on the VI icon to open the icon editor from the BD window LV triggers the default beep sound.....why?

There does not seem to be any reason why this bell fires. The icon editor still opens, I can drag and drop from the BD icon.

Drop the beep and make it function the same as the icon on the front panel.

Admittedly this is one of those things that isn't so much a usability issue but more of a continuous annoyance.

I don't get any sounds when I open the icon editor.  Have you observed this on any other computers / with any other installation of LabVIEW?

Does anyone else hear this behavior?

If you double click on the VI icon on the BD to open the icon editor, LV triggers the default beep.

It does it on every computer and every installation of LV I have.

I don't hear anything.

I do.

Doesn't sound like this is an idea anymore, but perhaps a behavior issue?

Never noticed before but it beeps every time I click on the VI icon when in the BD window, i.e. single click - beep, double click - beep & opens Icon Editor. (LabVIEW 2009)

I was going to say "no it doesn't happen on mine either" until it did.  I generally wouldn't notice because I usually have my speakers turned off.  The first time I double clicked on the icon.  No beep.  Close the icon editor and double click again, a beep.  Close the VI and open a new blank one, the first click or double click does not beep, but any subsequent ones do.  This is in LV 2010SP1.

LV2009SP1 shows the same behavior.  I don't have any older versions available right now to compare further.

One other thing I noticed is that when clicking on the icon in the front panel, the "marching ants" highlighting shows up around the icon.  When clicking on it in the block diagram, no highlighting shows up.  That may be some clue as to why they behave differently.

Alhough I haven't checked lately, I believe that every version back to 8.0 has done this.

I figured it was a holdover from the pre 8.0 versions where the BD icon was very limited in what you could do, not necessarily a bug, as the bell was intentionally put there....more like a vestigal organ.

While I agree that this should be removed, I would call this more of a bug than a feature request. I call it a bug because it doesn't happen on the front panel. I have filed a corrective action request for the bug so that R&D will take a look at it and fix it. I am going to go ahead and close out this idea as declined but R&D does know about the issue and will hopefully track down the issue.

Also, I found that if you open a VI, Control+E to get to the block diagram, and then click the icon then you won't get the beep the first time. You will actually have to click it again to get it. If you just navigate to the block diagram by clicking the window then it will beep the first time. Might have something to do with what event will actually cause the window to focus. Either way, I reproduced the issue in 2010 SP1 32-bit and the 2011 Beta 54-bit on Windows 7 32-bit and 64-bit.
