Make an option to turn off auto-grow on the front panel

Status: Already Implemented
Already Exists in LV

I cannot find any way to turn off autogrow on the front panel. For example, if I put a tab control down, it autogrows to include someething that I put down. This is very annoying because I spend a lot of time trying to get things to fit to a window. The auto grow makes it so I have to constantly resize things.

In fact, it would be good to have a global function that turns off all autogrow.

How often do you put a tab control down?

It's not something I would put down very often.  Generally just once when I am starting a new VI that I know I'm going to use it in.  Even if I do drop it, I don't ever recall having a problem with it including things I didn't want.  My FP is just not that cluttered at that point of time (if ever).  If it did include something accidentally, I don't think it is that hard to fix it.

I'd rather have NI spend their time working on dozens of other ideas.

I don't have LV open, but as far as I know, you can disable auto grow on tab controls. Just drop it and right click.

Or am I misunderstanding your problem?

No, the problem is when I put things INTO the tab control. Which I do all the time.

On my LV 2012, there is no option to disable autogrow for any front panel stuff. Maybe you can find it... try opening LV 2012.

I still don't understand how you are accidentally putting things into the tab control.  If you drop a control outside of the tab, or drop it in a spot that is less than 1/2 way in, then the control remains a part of the front panel and is not contained within a tab.

The help seems to indicate it's under the advanced submenu - http://zone.ni.com/reference/en-XX/help/371361J-01/lvhowto/additionalconfigfortabcntr/

Another Idea sorted.  Good work Tst (and elset191)

Yeah, OK, well done RavensFan also..... Smiley Tongue

Maybe we should introduce a separate vote count for "purge" to get rid of noise on the exchange.  The number of ideas is growing rapidly beyond the initial conception I think.....

Why is it such a slam dunk that there should not be a global option for the FP like there is for the BD?  I leave autogrow alone myself, but I can see the argument here.  I would not mind having clusters autogrow by default and the FP autogrow setting could stop it for those so inclined.  Tabs?  Don't use them, so I do not have an opinion there.

To my consternation, like the OP, I did not realize that there was an OFF option to the Tab control auto growth... So I suggest changing the idea to promote the "Auto Grow" menu item to the first level of contextual menu items, as it is the case for BD objects!

On a side note, I suppose that the reason the "Auto Grow" option has been pushed to the "Advanced" submenu is that its counterpart "Size to Fit" is specific to that object.

Function which, BTW, could be useful for BD objects (read Structures)... and might have already been requested if my memory serves me well.

PS: There is an interesting bug occuring when turning off the Auto Grow option on a Tab, BTW. Watch the label location...
