Split/New Window

Status: Declined

I often find myself switching back and forth between two VIs or two cases within a given VI to copy parts of the diagram (or check what another part of the diagram does, or for whatever other reason). In the latter case, it just dawned onto me that this is why "Word" has the Split Window and New Window functions. For those who have never used Word, this allows seeing another part of the document while working on it, either within the same window (split) or in a separate one (new) (I mostly use "New Window" as I have sufficient screen space and it is more convenient to organize).

My suggestion is to introduce a "New diagram window" feature, which allows working on the SAME VI diagram in as many windows as needed (I suppose two will be the usual number).

I really like this Idea. I think it would improve productivity for those who have the screenspace.

Hmmmm, I'm not quite sure. For pros this would be great to have. But I'm not sure if it won't mislead newbies to improper design, like having BDs which are threetimes the monitor size with a lot of wire clutter and locals...

Anyhow: kudos, as we all are pros Smiley Very Happy

@ErnieH: I agree, that pretty much looks like a duplicate. Sorry, I did not find it when searching the forum.

@oenk: maybe a solution to the multiple-screen-diagram syndrom would be a maximum diagram size (to be adjusted in "Options", like the "Page Setup..." of Word?).

It could as easily be a split in the single BD window, rather than opening multiple windows.

yes and no. Suppose you have a 3 or 4 cases in a structure you want to have look at simultaneously, or your screen has a 16:9 format. Arguably a split window would be easier to implement (and handle if you had a lot of windows opened otherwise).

Not that I am dreaming that NI will ever implement that, but for what the suggestion is worth...
