View Cluster Constant as Icon

Status: Completed
Available in NI LabVIEW 2010

Clusters are powerful and necessary, but they can easily clutter up otherwise immaculate code.  Why not have a "View As Icon" option (a la Express VIs) for cluster constants?

There have been similar suggestions, but I think we need a clean, simple solution.

Jack: Yes I agree that it makes most sense to only show icons for saved (typedef) controls.  Perhaps an additional requirement in this case would be to be able to "Customize..." or save an existing constant, without needing to first convert to a control.

You mean something like this?

I'm suprised nobody mentioned that using an LVClass (Object) instead of a cluster is one solution to this problem.

Kudos for invention of the word 'Clustosaurus'.  I have a few clustosaurii in my diagrams and they always clutter up any diagram.

Todd S. : This has been changed to "In Development." What implementation is being implemented... the 32x32 custom icon of the TypeDef or the small, generic, cluster icon like originally proposed?

Yes can someone say what points are being considered?

Currently the feature that is in beta is the small cluster icon as originally proposed. There were internal arguments for both sides but since the main point of the feature seems to be saving diagram space and since the feature is dealing with all cluster constants in general, not just typedef'd clusters, I went with the smaller icon.  If the typedef icon is really important to users I can try to see if I can have typedef'd clusters use that icon while regular cluster constants continue to use the smaller one.

I would much rather see the typedef user-created icon rather than the generic small cluster icon. Any others have opinions?
