menu ring scrollbar width

Status: New

With the proliferation of touch screens, it does not make sense for LabVIEW to have controls that cannot be made touch screen friendly.  The Menu Ring is one such control.  The scrollbar defaults to a narrow line, and it's width cannot be customized.  This makes it virtually unusable for a touch screen GUI.  I believe this would be a usefull upgrade for LV2014!

It still makes sense to have non-touch controls -- the new interfaces are coming into being but there are still plenty of the old ones. But you are right that we do need more controls that are touch friendly.

Add scrollbars to that list too...

Opening can of worms...:

Microsoft did a huge mistake when they thought it smart to let one interface (touch) dictate how we should work on all other interfaces...Smiley Frustrated

It's kind of funny how the term gorilla arms was coined over 30 years ago. If we only had touch, the mouse & keyboard would have been invented today and be hailed as a great improvement; "Get work done with less effort, speed and accuracy - buy a mouse & keyboard!".

Kidding aside; yes - it's nice to have GUI-elements that are optimized for touch (as touch is great for many applications), but that does not mean we should eliminate those that work nicely with a mouse and keyboard (we might want to develop those to be even better with a mouse and keyboard though, that's a different thing). A relevant side discussion is whether or not LabVIEW (the IDE) should have a touch-firendly mode / version (no - do not make that the only version!!;-)..I think that should be pretty far down the priority list. It would be nice to have available sometimes, but only as a supplement/alternative.

Haha, love the comment RE:invention of the mouse. So true.

Kudos added to this idea. I support adding customisability that improves the touch experience, although I don't like your phrasing "it does not make sense for LabVIEW to have controls that cannot be made touch screen friendly", which could be interpreted as "cripple the non-touch experience by removing any toys the Ipad boys can't share". There are and will remain a large install base with non-touch interface- let's all play nice.
