Connect to FTP server option under Utilities

If you right-click on the RT target in the project and select Utilities you can:

-View in system manager

-View in browser

-etc...

It would be useful to have a View in FTP Client there as well. I seldom need to access the web interface, but I often want to delete files prior to a new deployment e.g. and this would be a quick way to do it.

Yes, you can use the web interface to access the files as well, but that's much more cumbersome than to just open an ftp connection.

We actually tried that a couple years ago, and ran into problems with different FTP clients not programmatically supporting launching and connecting with credentials.  At the time FileZilla could almost do it - perhaps we could resurrect this experiment.

However, don't expect FTP to be a supported transfer protocol forever.  There are many technologies that look promising that do what FTP can do but better, more secure, and more flexibly.  The push will be to develop/integrate/refine those technologies rather than work on FTP.
