vista redux

sharing info for others:

1) original NXT-G v1.0 software that came with Mindstorms works for me  under Vista Ultimate (USB and Bluetooth)...
2)  NI-VISA 4.2 (latest version, ?correct version for LV 8.5?) breaks NXT-G v1.0... USB detection doesn't work... tried installing both pre-
and post- NXT-G v1.0 install
3) LV 8.5 + NXT toolkit + Run as administrator  doesn't work either.... mass compile ok, NXT is detected, but compilation errors. Suspect missing VISA is problem.

Have not tested:
NI-VISA 4.2 + LV 8.5 + NXT toolkit

the earlier Vista thread here is confusing. can anyone clarify how they got NXT toolkit working under Vista?
was NXT-G v1.0 also working?

The driver that implements communication to the NXT (Fantom) is built on top of VISA.  So I wouldn't expect either the Toolkit or the MINDSTORMS software to work on a Vista machine that did not have some version of VISA installed.  (The LEGO software includes a slimmed down version of VISA.)  I'm not aware of any backwards-incompatible changes between VISA 4.1 and VISA 4.2, so I'd be curious to hear if others are seeing new problems after installing VISA 4.2 on top of MINDSTORMS.

I believe the key step mentioned in the previous thread about using the Toolkit on Vista was that LabVIEW must be "Run As Administrator" so that VISA will have the proper permissions to load everything it needs.

Does that help at all?
