Question #1.  Is there a way to allow automated shutdown of the system under these circumstances.

#2.  What is the easiest way to recover from this. At present we have to call the System Integerator to come and restart app.

Hello RodS,

It sounds like the root cause of the issue is that NI Measurement & Automation Explorer (MAX) and its database of devices, channels, and tasks in your system is becoming corrupted by improper shutdowns of your system.  Can you elaborate a little more on how NI software will not allow Windows to shutdown properly?  Addressing this issue sounds like the best way to solve to this issue.

One thing I would recommend is upgrading to the latest version of MAX and any drivers you are using to see if the instability is improved in a later version.  It looks like from the error message that you are using MAX 3.1.1.  What National Instruments hardware and drivers (versions) are you currently using?

There is one other option although we generally do not recommend doing this.  You could try to delete the 'Data' folder in the C:\Program Files\National Instruments\MAX directory.  First you will need to close all National Instruments programs and make sure that the NIMax.exe and nimxs.exe are not present in the list of processes in Windows Task Manager.  When you delete this folder, you will also delete any tasks, channels, and devices you have saved in MAX and will need to recreate these the next time you start MAX.  Because you will have to reconfigure your system, this is generally a last resort.  I would recommend working to see if this issue can be avoided with proper Windows shutdowns.
