I was doing coloring of individual cells of a large table, and that was really slow (on a slow computer). Defer Panel updates brought some improvement, but reduced the time by less than 50%.
Today, I would try make the background transparent and use a picture or a mass of color boxes, but I don't know if that would really be faster.
