2 slot CPCI Chassis

A quick hardware question: I'm looking for the smallest possible
Compact-PCI chassis. Preferably 2 slots, one for NI's 8145 RT
controller, and one for a daq card. 3 slot would be possible, but
physical size is a big issue. I'm aware of NI's 4 slot chassis and a
few similar from other vendors, and have seen 2 slot backplanes, but so
far no 2-slot 3U chassis. Does anyone know of one?

Thanks,
Dave Thomson

Hello Dave!

You are correct, the smallest PXI chassis NI sells is the 4-slot PXI-1002. I am not aware of a 2 or 3 slot chassis; however, there are a couple of resources you could use to help locate one.

PXI Systems Alliance www.pxisa.org
PCI Industrial Computer Manufacturers Group www.picmg.com

Both sites have searchable lists for PXI and CompactPCI manufacturers and products.

David,

You may not be able to find a 2-slot or 3-slot PXI chassis on the market - I just spent five minutes on www.picmg.org myself and came up empty. But if you find one, I would be interested in knowing about it if you are willing to re-post that info.

What exactly is your application? I am guessing that it is an in-vehicle application, due to the size constraint that you mentioned. Have you considered FieldPoint? NI has FP-2000 and FP-2010 modules that run embedded LabVIEW RT code, much like the 8145RT controllers. With FieldPoint, you can then have IO modules connected to the network module (the 2000 and 2010) for your measurements. The FP-20xx controller would behave very similarly to your 8145RT. Plus, FieldPoint is typically smaller then PXI and req
uires less power. I included some good links on the FP-20xx series modules and FieldPoint below:

Greg,
The only company I have had much luck with so far is Hartmann
Electronik in Germany: http://www.hartmann-elektronik.de/ They will
make a custom chassis with 2 or 3 slots. I don't know the price yet.
I am looking at FieldPoint. Maybe I'll give you a call about it.

Greg,
I have found one other company that does have a 3 slot chassis and
some other small options for 3U. www.inova-computers.com
