A client using VI server to query status of application causes server to crash with an error in nids.dll

I have just upgrade a project from Labview 6.1 to Labview 8.5.1.  There are two executables produced. The main executable exports a number of VIs through VI server for the second application to call. In Labview 6.1 everything worked fine. Now the main application crashes with an error in nids.dll at offset 00048076.

Using a small client test program I can prevent the crash by slowing down the calls to the exported VI.

Has anyone had a similar problem?
