ActiveX Excel Workbook Filename

When opening an Excel Workbook the input Filename under Open Excel._Workbook the filename is a string. So I convert the pathname to a string. But when I invoke Close the Save and/or SaveAs the Filename input is a Variant. Why is the Filename a string when opening a file, but a Variant when you save and close it? I'm a little confused

And does anyone know of a good reference for all this ActiveX stuff ... preferably online. I like working with ActiveX but it can get really complicated sometimes.
