I am a Phd. Too. Let's talk shall we.
From your question you might not familiar with the GPIB. If you do not use the brand name device such as HP, Tektronic, and etc, chance are you must write your own driver.
GPIB driver is not too hard. I presume that you have only one instrument in the lab. However, If you got more than one instrument, it also use the same concept but you must change the vi from single to multiple GPIB.
What you got to do.
First Init the device.
Second set the device channel ( a instrument may have more than one channel for a example, an osiloscope has four channel, and only one device).
Third read or write from the channel. (This process can be repeat until you done with the program ).
Fourth ter
minate the device. Most of the moden device you may regard this process.

IF you send me a copy of your manual that have GPIB command in it, I would be happy to help you out.

P.S. do not panic. It is very easy than you thought.
