I have not driven one of these from a D/A converter, but I have often done this with op amps. I have built current regulators this way.
These devices are robust: So long as you do not put too much voltage (>35 V) on the inputs or omit the required bypass capacitors, they are nearly impossible to destroy by shorting: They just shut down. They are also quite inexpensive and readily available.
With an inductive load like the solenoid, some protective diodes are also recommended.
