Anybody who has build an application in labview to communiacate to a LNS DDE Server?

Hi,
The task is the following:
To build an application in labview in order to communicate to a LNS DDE server. The device to communicate to is a Lonworks device. The labview client is supposed to send and receive both network variables and the so called explicit messages.

Reading the NV was easy. The problem rises when trying to send and receive the explicit messages. How does the format look like? Wondering if anybody has build any such application! Greatful for some help, anh help!

Hello!

I believe we discussed this on the phone, various ways to achieve what you are asking, but also that it might be a good idea to post your question here as well since there might be exists a possibility that someone has already written an application that communicates with a LNS DDE Server.

Unfortunately it seems like that is not the case, but I did a few searches on Google about this and I post the links that might be of interest:

You should be able to use Echelon's tools that you can read about here:
http://www.echelon.com

This discussion forum seems to have several posts about LNS DDE Servers so it might be an idea to post your question there:
http://www.control.com

Hope this helps!

Those posts in this thread are from 2006. The posts in the control.com forum where probably from at least one forum software version before the current and likely lost somewhere in /dev/nul during upgrades to the forum software since then.

The world has moved on and LON is not really used anymore nowadays. An ethernet cable is much more versatile in its use and also much cheaper to install than a dedicated network like LON since everybody produces and sells ethernet and nobody anymore LON. In addition WIFI is even simpler in terms of installation as there won't be any cables necessary (well for the power of course but that is a differnt issue).

Also DDE is a technology that is even older than that. It was developed for Windows 3.0 and had it's high tide in the 90ies of last century. It was already considered legacy technology by Microsoft and most others at the turn of the century and most people do not even know nowadays what it is. LabVIEW's DDE library is still present under the 32 bit installation of LabVIEW but removed from the palettes. It is NOT recommended for new developments and there is no maintenance of the existing implementation. It has a few holes in its implementation, for instance you can't implement DDE Execute with it as a server, but NI has stopped maintaining it around 2000.
