Application Builder GPIB-USB MAX

OK this is a tough one.

I've built an application using LV8.2 that communicates with a GPIB instrument (Agilent 34970A).  I am using the NI GPIB-USB-HS converter to make things easy.  However I ran in to an unexpected problem.

I must include NI 488.2 in the installer for the application in order to run the NI GPIB-USB-HS converter.  When I do this MAX 4.1 is also automatically installed.  (Even though you could include it separately if you wanted to.)  Now when a user installs the application MAX automatically starts, It dose not recognize the instrument on the NI GPIB-USB-HS converter.  The user must cancel out of MAX.

How can I keep MAX from being installed, or at least keep it from running?

I tried fiddling with Hardware Configuration settings in the installer builder.   I unclicked the "Launch MAX Configuration Import Wizard after installation" but the verify hardware still popped up after installing the application.

Bonus:

Dose the Found new hardware wizard have to run every time the NI GPIB-USB-HS converter is plugged in?  (Both on the development system and with the application)

Hi Hopeless,

There's no way to prevent MAX from being installed, as it is a necessary software for interfacing with National Instruments hardware products.

It is mentioned in the GPIB-USB-HS Installation Guide you should install all software before plugging in the hardware. This essentially solves all MAX and Windows Hardware Wizard problems your seem to be encountering.

Bonus: Yes, it's similar to reinstalling a PCI card each time. We've taken a look at product suggestions hoping to stop the Found New Hardware Wizard in future driver releases.

Cheers.

I think that I had too many hours in at the computer before I sent my last e-mail.

What I really want to get rid of is the NI-488.2 getting started wizard.  For some reasion I thought it was part of MAX.

When I use the Application Builder I have no way of guiding a user through the wizard, and I am not sure that it is necessary.
I do instruct the user install NI-488.2 before pluging in the GPIB-USB, but the wizard pops up before he/she could do it.

Maybe this isn't that big of a deal, but I end up having to ask the user not to follow instructions on the screen.

2nd Bouns  Can I keep the installer from placing the MAX icon on the desk top?

Hello Hopeless,

Without NI-488.2 installed, the Getting Started Wizard would not open...it wouldn't even be on the computer yet!  It installs with NI-488.2.  Have you tested this behavior on a target machine with no drivers installed or only on your development machine (where NI-488.2 is already installed)?

Have a great day,

Meghan,

I think the OP wants to install NI-488.2 with the executable but does not want the user to see the Getting Started Wizard.

I have a similar situation where the installer may need to be run on a clean computer by an unsophisticated user who does not need to see the Wizard and who would not know what to do with it.
