Automating an experiment

I appreciate your advice, thank you.  I have a little background in nuclear engineering, so I'm familiar with designing fail-safe mechanisms.

I should also add that this type of test has been done for a couple decades.  It's just a basic pulmonary function device based on forced expiration (FEV).  Horse's lungs will not be harmed.
