I am not able to use all Display Codes. For example a string Hello\b is shown as Hello or Jump\fin\s\the\sfire is shown as Jumpin the fire The linefeed\n is working but the carrige return\r also works like a line feed.
I think the only problem with the two \ characters you mention is that there's no representation for them in the font that you're using. If you really need to see them as opposed to send control codes to some device, try a font like Terminal.
