CLD, allowed to switch mouse buttons to better suit a leftie?

Hello All,

I am hopefully taking the CLD exam this week, and have a question regarding the PC setup.

Before I start the exam, am I allowed to go into the Windows Control Panel and switch the left and right mouse buttons? Also, this sounds really silly asking, but is the mouse cable likely to be long enough to be repositioned on the left instead of the right?

As a life-long left-handed person (not my fault, really!), I am most efficient when doing LV code if the mouse is in my left 🙂

I only ask, as I know with these kinds of tests everything is locked down pretty tightly (figuratively as well as physically!).

Here is hoping!

Wish you all the very best for the CLD exams!!!

I strongly feel that you shouldn't be too worried about that, as the exam goals are to judge your skills as a LabVIEW developer, and it will be unfair to expect someone to always program with their right hand :smileyhappy:

I sure your local NI office, where you will be taking the test, will be able to help you out with this.

Once you start the exam, you can (and I encourage you to) customize the LabVIEW settings to best suit your own development style.  I don't see any reason why you shouldn't be able to customize the operating system in the same way.  Just make sure you don't bring anything extra with you to the exam, as external code/utilities are not allowed.

I think you should be able to setup the PC to accomdate your left hand even before you start the exam. That way you get an even start with all the right-handers. This may be a moot point as it should take only seconds to do this, but you really need every second you can get for the CLD. That is unless you are a LV genius like one of my coworkers who completed the CLD in about 3 hours.

Thanks for the hints everyone, left handed it is then!

Now I just have to wait to see if I can even sit the exam, apparently it is being FedExed over from the US to the UK... should know tomorrow if I can take it on Wednesday!

Is it just me, or does anyone else think the sample exam solutions are really, really not up to the standard the CLD is supposed to setting?

I'm sure you could have knocked 4 hours off your time if you had Quick Drop back then...

Another CLD related question, do I have to put tip-strips on sub-VIs (i.e. not actual User Interface VIs)?

You want to document your VIs as much as possible.  I would recommend that if you have time, you put a description and tip on any front panel control you've dropped on any VI you've written.  But if you're pressed for time, I'd say tip-strips on subVI controls is probably a low priority compared to writing functional code.  🙂
