CLD exam

My Instructor for the LabVIEW Intermediate class took the Re-certification exam and told me that it is similar to the CLAD.

I recertified my CLD, and yes it was a one hour Q and A.

The first time I certified for my CLD, it was a 3 hour coding and a 1 hour Q and A exam.  I guess that has changed now.

Now it is 6 hours of coding cut down to 4 hours time, no Q&A.  I wish they would cut down on the coding.  4 hours is too long to sit in one place.

The recert is Q&A, not trivial. I find that I have a hard time with some questions in that environment as I never think about them in the LabVIEW environment, i.e. I don't always "remember" whether a value brought out of a For loop is automatically set to "auto-index" , because when I am wiring it obviously is. Then if I don't want an array there, "click", so knowing that doesn't improve my LV "experience".  As to the 4 hours being too long a time, well you don't need to use it all  Smiley Wink    It is a long time, although about 1/2 through it seems like the clock speeds up. Yes, the bi-annual renewal seems a bit much (as I realize that the first year has almost passed since my re-cert), particularly when taking the recert for some of us is a day off from work, which in the consulting world is a day off from billable hours. So the $195 US or so becomes considerably more. Add to it that the exam, at last check, isn't given within 100 miles of where I live and it becomes more than a little annoyance.

PS: Having completed my re-cert for CLA last Friday and assuming that I sqeeked by), that means I will only have one more test between me and retirement.

They don't give you instant feedback with the CLA?  When I recerted for the CLD I was told that I had passed immediately, made the 2 1/2 drive home much better than the 2 1/2 drive there. Of course, picking up one of our kids from college also made the trip worthwhile.

"They don't give you instant feedback with the CLA?"

How could they grade a four hour essay test instantly? I think it took a month and a half to hear back the the first time. So I figure I'll find out about February.

You aren't confusing the CLAD with the CLA exam are you?

No, just wasn't familiar with the CLA exam. Now there is a case where 2 year renewal seems really silly, the primary  concepts of architecting a large LabVIEW project will change a lot in the next 2 years, major paradigm shift that will invalidate the major concepts you have worked with for the last two years!  I might believe that to claim to be a knowledgeable "developer" you might be expected to demonstrate familiarity with the more current versions, although I'm not sure what in the CLD recert would do that, but while you have undoubtedly learned some kewl new stuff in the last 5 years, would what you knew when you originally passed the CLA be so out of date as to make passing it now in doubt?

The public domain info that NI reveals about the test shows that new concepts will be evaluated. I'm not revealing anything by saying that.

Lacking the test requirements, I could have done the design about the same way. ("There is nothing new under the sun." Eclesiastis ?)

The CLD doesn't give any instant feedback.  When I took it a couple of years ago, it was 4 hours of programming.  It took a month or so to hear back.  If the CLAD was ever together with the CLD, you would have gotten instant feedback on it, as it is just multiple choice and graded by the PC.  Currently, the CLAD and CLD are aeperate exams, and you must pass the CLAD before you can register to take the CLD.
