the speed of transmission depends on the baud rate. this is the rate the bits in "@\n" are transferred. when the maximum baud rate is 9600, then some 100 Hz is the maximum pulse rate you can achieve with RS232 using this single shot mode...
The best and most accurate way would be to check the external trigger capabilities of your device like AnalogKid suggested. there are DIO devices for some 10s $. or you use your parallel port as trigger source (this deliverers also TTL signals, presuming your device needs TTL)
