As long as you have a COM port you should be able to test it. Granted it won't do anything useful but you should be able to see it run.

No worries.
I actually received several error messages with this vi and looked them all up and solved the issues.
However, the issue with the COM port does not appear to be the actually reason for this error, I have been testing other vi's today, with the COM port selected as COM4 and have run them without being connected to the device on my latptop and they run just fine. But this particular one does not.
I guess I will just have to wait until I get back to my lab and run this vi connected to the device.
