Color Ramp for 3D Parametric Surface Graph?

I need to create a color ramp for a 3D Parametric Surface Graph.

Things I've tried:

Color Ramp indicator (Controls>Classic Controls>Numeric palette). Problem -
I can't resize the ramp width. Customizing is a pain.

Place an Intensity Graph behind the 3D Graph, exposing only the ramp (Z
scale). This works but is a bit convoluted.

Any other ideas?

It looks like someone asked the same question last year in the forums and got some good answers, including example code:
