Combo box values must be unique

In our combo box we strings on the left and values on the right. The strings are descriptive but I want a couple of strings to have the same value on the right side. However when I set the same value in to places on the right side I LV will not let me close the box. I think that should be my choice not LV's. Any way around this draconian edict?
