I have a couple comments on the new DVD installer for LabVIEW.
I like that everything is on just a few DVD's especially the device drivers. It saves a lot of extra disc swapping through the process. Also, that you can have it install the add on packages at the same time without the extra disc swapping.
What I don't like is the initial screen where you select the products to install. Only core LabVIEW is preselected. All possible add on packages are listed and not selected. Some of those I want to install because it is a part of my developer's suite. Some of them I don't because it is not a part of the suite. It forces you to click on each option, decide what it is, and click on Install if you want to install it. But some of them (particularly the ones that aren't a part of my suite) I don't know exactly what they are, or whether they are called what I think they are, leads to a lot of questioning as to whether I should be trying to install it or not. All the options confuse me a bit. Some things like CVI or Measurement Studio I don't use, thus I don't want to install them even though I am eligible to.
I just wish there was some way that the installer was a little smarter about pre-selecting the options to install. Perhaps by looking up the serial number first from NI's website and see which package that the serial number is affiliated with. Before you knew what you could install because everything was separate discs. If you weren't eligible to install it, you didn't receive the discs. The disadvantage of that being is was few packages to install, plus device drivers, and it would want to try to install the appropriate device drivers between each package. Thus it lengthened the overall install time and increased the disc swapping.
Any comments?

I agree with your comments. I selected things, but did not really know what was included in the professional development version. Now I have four packages that will expire in about a week. I also had to get an external DVD drive, because our cheap ass DELL boxes only have cd drives and the cases are locked down with cables. I got one of these from ADDONICS. They have some really cool hardware.
