Create simulated NI-DAQmx Device window not loading/freezing

I am trying to create a new NI-DAQmx device, but the window to do that is not loaded/frozen and MAX is unresponsive. I have tried uninstalling and re-installing it, and it still doesn't work. A screenshot of my problem will be provided. How do I fix this?Screenshot (128).png

Who installed LabVIEW?  What version (give us year and bit-ness)?  Did you install the "default" drivers?

Note that LabVIEW can be difficult to install (particularly if you "pick and choose").  It is also difficult (and potentially dangerous) to uninstall.  There have been numerous discussions of this on the Forum recently (I wrote one fairly recently), so I'd advise answering the first paragraph first, and holding off on modifications before you get comments after answering my questions.

I installed the 2022 64-bit version of LabVIEW. I installed all the drivers that came along with the NI package manager, including the NI-DAQmx driver (version 20.1.0).

Aha!  Try installing LabVIEW 2022 32-bit (you can do it "on top of" your 64-bit version, it's only Disk Space ...).  I installed 32-bit LabVIEW, really wanting support for LabVIEW 2021 SP1 and LabVIEW 2019 SP1 (and for the myRIO 2021 SP1 Software Bundle).  Here's what NIPM shows I have successfully installed:

DAQmx installed on NINDS Laptop.png

As you can see, everything is either 2022 Q3 or 21.3.0 (for the two LabVIEW 2019 SP1 installations).  This sounds like NIPM missing something here, but adding the earlier LabVIEW versions (which NIPM will happily accommodate) might fix the problem for you ...

Hi,

Help please. I'm having this same issue.

I installed LabVIEW 2019 with drivers including Switch Executive 19.0.0.49152. And then TestStand 2019. I then installed LabVIEW 2022Q3. I successfully created Simulated Switches. All was good. Then yesterday, I imported an NI Switch Executive Virtual Device. Then the Simulated Switches stopped working. I deleted them. Now I want to add them back, but just like the original post, part of the creation window is missing. I can't select a slot. I ran NIPM to repair MAX, but it said "We encountered a problem:" and was unable to repair anything. Help?

LabVIEW installations were always something of a problem, particularly when more than one version was being installed.  It worked "reasonably well" (except LabVIEW 2011) until LabVIEW 2017, which introduced NIPM, which had quirks that (I think) it took NI a year or two to figure out.  It is still something of an issue when you want more than one version of LabVIEW on a system, particularly when the "difference in ages" is >2-3 years.

If the problem persists, and you have access to another PC (or a VM on which to try this out), you might try the following:

  1. Uninstall all NI Software using NIPM.  Note this takes at least two passes, as NIPM has to remove itself as a separate step.  Do not mess with the Registry.  You (probably) can remove "National Instrument" folders on the "OS" part of the C: drive (i.e. not in "User" areas).
  2. Bring up Control Panel and go to Programs and Features.  Scan the list of installed software and uninstall things that NIPM missed.  I usually find VISA listed, and so far, found it safe to remove (if doing "remove all NI Stuff".
  3. You can (but might not need to) remove "Folders" on the C:\ drive in the folders "Program Files", "Program Files (x86), and "Program Data" called "National Instruments".  (Note that "Program Data" is a Hidden Folder).  If you install and use VIPM, you should probably also delete any "JKI" folders, as that holds information on the VI Packages you (had) installed (you'll want to re-install them).
  4. Reboot, and begin to install LabVIEW.  Strange as it may sound, you "should" be able to install them either Oldest-first to Newest, or Newest-first to Oldest.  [I absolutely could not install LabVIEW 2017 and 2018 "on top of" LabVIEW 2016 and had many talks and e-mails with Marina, a very patient Software Support specialist at NI, until she bugged the Development team who said "Install 2018 first".  I didn't believe her at first, but after "doing it my way" and failing, I started over, did it "her way", and it worked!].
