If you look at the output of the serial port read, you'll notice that it's a string. The input to a chart is a DBL by default but it will take any numeric data. You have to convert the string to a number before you can connect the chart. You can use the Scan From STring function on the String palette or one of the other conversion functions on the String/Number Conversion sub-palette.
