I recently purchased a USB-6501 DIO module, directly from NI, and it came with two DAQmx 8.8 cd's and a documentation cd. The application software is Labview student edition 8.2.1 and the DAQmx 8.8 fails to install. Upon insertion of the DAQmx cd the init. screen appears and then the 'pick application(s)' screen comes up and I choose 8.2. After choosing the software packages(s) the DAQmx installer replies with 'chosen application(s) not compatible'. I have tried numerous combinations of picks and so forth but the DAQmx software refuses to install. My question is: Does DAQmx 8.8 work with Labview Student Edition 8.2.1 ? If so, then maybe someone could help me get this software installed. Also, if DAQmx is not required for the USB-6501 then is there any smaller driver package(s) that may be used instead? I only have a dial-up connection where I live, no prospect of high-speed infrastructure anytime soon, so any suggestions and/or small driver would be a great help.

Hi Snaggleto,
It sounds like you didn't install LabVIEW prior to DAQmx.
If you install LabVIEW first, you don't need to select LabVIEW support manually while installing DAQmx.
The suggestion is to install LabVIEW first, then install driver.
If you wish to use a smaller driver DAQmx base, http://joule.ni.com/nidu/cds/view/p/id/1077/lang/en, is another option.
Even so, it's more than 300 MB, and you'll lose a lot of features for example: DAQ Assistant.

Hi Kate,
Thanks for the reply and suggestions. The install flow was as follows:
1. Previous version of LV se 7.1 removed from computer.
2. LV se 8.2.1 installed and fully operational.
3. DAQmx 8.8 cd put in drive and autorun.
4. Initialization screen appears --- so far so good.
5. Init. completed.
6. Application software screen appears and auto selected 7.1, 8.2, LV express and maybe another one.
7. So far so good, then I click continue.
8. Error message appears "incompatible software --- please make other selection, contact NI"
9. Many attempts at choosing various items and no luck....
Right now I still don't have a clue on what to do.
Thanks.

Hello,
Thank you for posting to the NI forums. Could it be possible that DAQmx 8.8 is already installed on your computer? Please check in Measurement and Automation Explorer (Start>>Programs>>National Instruments>>Measurement and Automation Explorer). Expand the Software menu in the Configuration window and check to see if DAQmx 8.8 is there or if any version of DAQmx is there. Also, please post a screen shot of the installer screen that allows you to select software to install support for with the software you have already selected. Thanks!

Hello Margaret,
I opened MAX and expanded the 'software' selection and found the following software, listed in order:
- CVI run time
- Labview (LV) 7.0
- LV 7.1.2
- advanced analysis
- LV 8.2.1
- LV run-time 7.1
- LV run-time 8.0
- LV run-time 8.2.1
- measurement and automation explorer
- NI-USI
Ater looking around a bit, I found that DAQmx 8.8 does not support LV 7.0 but does support LV 7.1. I then went to the 7.0 directory and found that there is nothing in there (LV 7.1 does have populated directories so it is installed) and running "Add or Remove Programs" only produced "National Instruments Software". I did not remove the "National Instruments Software" because I really didn't have the time to do a complete re-install of everything. In the past, a couple of years ago, I did have LV 7.0 installed but I removed it (using "Add or Remove Programs") and installed LV 7.1. When I purchased LV 8.2.1 I just ran "Add or Remove Programs" to un-install LV 7.1 but it appears that the LV 7.1 is there and LV 7.0 has a directory name but is not populated. I then deleted the LV 7.0 directory and re-ran MAX but MAX still indicates that LV 7.0 is installed. I would bet that DAQmx 8.8 will not install because it thinks that LV 7.0 is there. Maybe there is something in the registry which needs to be modified so that the system will not be fooled into thinking that LV 7.0 is installed.
That is all for now and thank you for your time and consideration.

Hello,
If you want to uninstall correctly your previous version of LabVIEW you need some useful tools, so check this post and follow the steps indicated.
Hopefully this helps.

Hello Snaggletooth,
After re-reading your previous posts, I noticed that you said that the driver is trying to install support for LabVIEW 7.1. Based on your posts it sounds like you tried to remove LabVIEW 7.1, but perhaps it did not uninstall sucessfully. On the DAQmx installation page that allows you to choose what features are installed, you can deselect DAQmx support for LabVIEW 7.1 (see attached screen shot) and only have support for LV 8.2 plus whatever else the driver automatically selects. Having any remnants of LabVIEW 7.0 on your computer should not be a problem since you are only installing support for versions of LabVIEW that are supported by the DAQmx driver. Hope this helps!
In the screen shot you can see that I have an "x" beside LabVIEW 7.1 Support. You can get this X by clicking on the down arrow next to LabVIEW 7.1 Support and selecting "Do not install this feature."

Hi Margaret,
Yes, I have not posted today due to being busy but I have gotten DAQmx to install. When I realized that 7.1 should not be recognized by MAX because it (7.1) should have been uninstalled. After hunting around I found remnants of 7.1 and 7.0 so I ran "Add/Remove Programs" (again) and 7.1 did show up, as well as, 7.0. I removed them, rebooted, and brought up MAX and this time MAX software only reported 7.0. I took the chance that DAQmx should work because it does not deal with 7.0 and this time the DAQmx 8.8 software installed and appears to be working. I have not exercised everything so I won't feel confident until I have the chance to run things this weekend.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
