DFT windowing on non-periodic functions

I have been stuggling to use FFT to get the correct Fourier transform of a STEP function.  I have come to realize that the DISCRETE FOURIER transform inherently is periodic & therein lies the problem.  The analytical transform for the STEP function does exist.  My understanding is that the DISCRETE transform is capable of producing the same results but some tricks need to be employed.  I have investigated the WINDOWING issue but that still does not produce correct results unless I am not using the VI's correctly.

There must have been someone that has done this?

Any help would be appreciated!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
