Datafinder Indexing driving me bonkers!

Datafinder is driving me bonkers! How can I control it? Everytime it is indexing files, it causes my cursor to blink about 4 times per second. Blissfully, when running LabVIEW the cursor seems unaffected, but pretty much anything else in Windows shows my normal pointer with it's little "busy" ring blinking away. I noticed this in XP, and now I'm running Windows 7 and it still does it. I could have sworn there was some interface to the indexing service somewhere (the Task bar?) that would allow me to pause indexing, but I can't find it in Windows 7. I saw a forum discussion explaining how to disable the datafinder service, but I was kinda hoping there was a less drastic way of disabling it temporarily.

Actually, if it didn't cause my cursor to blink, it wouldn't bother me at all. Anywone know how this works?

Hi Minella,

everytime the cursor blinks DataFinder is indexng a file on your system - this should only happen when your computer is idle for a certain amount of time or in case of first indexing of a Search Area. You can configure DataFinder to either start indexing after a longer period of time or you can pause DataFinder from indexing.

To configure DataFinder right-click on the yellow DataFinder cogwheel in your taskbar (system tray). You can either choose 'Pause Indexing' or 'Configure...' to change the 'Idle time before indexing' on the 'Indexer' tab.

Note that on WIndows 7 not all items are automatically displayed in your taskbar. By clicking on the small 'arrow-up' button in your taskbar you can see all taskbar items and select 'My DataFinder'....

So, it obviously can't tell when the computer is idle. Also, there is no datafinder in my system tray. That's what I was looking for. I have a total of 5 items that appear when I click on the triangle, and none are the datafinder. I can click customize, but I still don't see datafinder listed anywhere. Does it matter that I'm running Windows 7 64bit?

If it doesn't appear in the taskbar, it may no be properly installed. Have you tried repairing the installation?

Hi Chris,

you can also configure/pause DataFinder by using LabVIEW. This simple VI shows how to pause 'My DataFinder':

PauseDataFinder.png

To configure DataFinder open the drop-down list of the 'My DataFinder' refnum constant (click the small arrow right to 'My DataFinder') and chose 'Manage DataFinders'. Right-click on 'My DataFinder' and chose 'Configure....'

Nice tip. I'll keep that in my back pocket. I haven't had a chance to attempt to reinstall the Datafinder toolkit yet. I'll update this thread when I do to indicate whether is solved the missing datafinder controls.

thanks,

Chris
