So it can essentially be used as the "URL" for the string input on some of the DataSocket VIs (from the palette)?
If so, then that answers my original question.
I thought that NI had been deprecating the DataSocket API in favor of the Shared Variable API. I seem to recall notes to this regard in the help files for the DataSocket API in some previous version, but they are not currently in 2012. Did NI change its mind or am I mistaken on this?

Hello,
Correct. You can use the Shared Variable Control as the URL for the DataSocket Open VI
The LabVIEW 2012 Help stills mentions this fact. And yes, we encourage customers to use the Shared Variable API, as the DSC module and other software plug-ins use them. DataSocket should be used as a last alternative.

Seems that if the Shared Variable Refnum had as robust of a network browser and supported the new silver theming, the encouragement to use the Shared Variable API would be stronger....
