Example Finder Modification

How should you modify a VI you found in the Example Finder?

Examples that come with LabVIEW "live" inside the LabVIEW "program files".  If you want to use them as building blocks for your own code, you want to make a copy of the Example material in your own LabVIEW "space" inside your "My Documents" folder, leaving the original Example material intact.  I suggest you do the following:

  • Open the example by using the Example Finder.
  • If it consists of a single VI, go to File, Save As, Copy, Substitute copy for original, putting the Copy in your LabVIEW space.
  • If it is a LabVIEW Project, highlight the Project name at the top of the Project Explorer and Save a Copy in your LabVIEW space.
  • Close the Example and get out of the Example Finder.
  • Now go to your own copy in your My Documents folder (where you saved it) and work with your Copy of the Example.

Should you "mess up", you can always go back and get another "clean" copy.
