I see you probably got an answer but I will still chime in here.
I have used TightVNC http://www.tightvnc.com/ with great success controlling a computer running a LabView app in Atlanta, GA from Seattle,WA.
Our corporate IS department approved TightVNC over the standard VNC because they said it has better security.
I did not notice any menu effect troubles, but we were running LV 8.2 I believe.
