How are the digital filters classified ?

I want to know how are the digital filters classified? I got kind of confused.
I think Butterworth, Chebyshev and Eliptical are all IIR filters?
Am I right?
Or IIR and FIR are the general types of filters, Butterworth is named after somebody who invented the specific filter.

Butterworth filters are classified into both IIR type and FIR type: Butterworth IIR and Butterworth FIR?

thanks for your reply!

Hello Fenny,

Look into this websites for a Q&A on this exact question:

http://www.ni.com/support/labview/toolkits/analysis/analy4.htm

If you want to have more detail, the LabVIEW Analysis Concepts Manual will guide you to several concepts in Math and Signal Processing used in LabVIEW. You can find this in your LabVIEW directory:

C:\Program Files\National Instruments\LabVIEW 7.1\manuals\anacon.pdf

or download it from:

http://www.ni.com/pdf/manuals/370192c.pdf

Also, look at the latest LabVIEW Digital Filter Design Toolkit.
