How can I use the output value from SIMPLE PID to write something to the serial port?

Thank you Kristen.  That was a great deal of help.  I believe fuzzy logic is perfect for our application.  Is there any way I can get a simple VI for Labview 7 Express because all the toolkits I see are very expensive.  I couldnt seem to find it in the example finder.

Fuzzy Logic is part of PID & Fuzzy Logic Toolkit. You can nevertheless create a simple Fuzzly Logic Algorithm by defining your membership functions and assignig if/then statements depending on the value of the function.
