How do I detect programatically when the screen saver has been activated and/or deactivated?

I would like to monitor when this event, so the Labview application can trigger a password dialog.

Here you'll find a VI which is called "Screen saver control.vi". This VI provides the user with the ability to get or set the timeout of the screensaver, as well as determine whether the screen saver is active.
