How can I set the DAQmx device on the remote system? I have NI-7831R on a desktop, but when I open MAX on my lap top which is connected to the desktop I can't see the device? Should I do something to configure the device?

How are the Laptop connected to the Desktop ??
And MAX is, as fare as I know, only for local devices and Real Time controllers.

An ethernet line is for the connection, wireless turned off.

As I can see from NI webside, your device NI-7831R is a FPGA board.
I don't think it will work with DAQmx.
You need the FPGA module for programming it.
And you will never find the card with MAX over ethernet, you will properbly be able to find the host pc, if the host pc is a real time system.

I do have the FPGA module on my laptop. I checked MAX on the labview installed on the desktop I can't see the 7831R either. Is that right not to see the hardware?

Yes, as your desktop is NOT a real time target.

The 7831R is not a DAQmx device, so it should not show up under your DAQmx devices. It should show up in MAX on the computer it is installed in as as a RIO device. However this will only show up if you have NI-RIO driver installed on the system as well. What version of NI-RIO are you using?
