He cannot, the matlab function always returns result in dB / frequency bin.

you need to do some own research about this one. I would start with taking some simple well described data, some sinusoid, that you generate in one of those environments, save it to a file and run it through another one, beware of saving in different datatype. Use some simple setting (no window, no overlap, some reasonable Data length - 1024, same FFT length as data and so on).
