How to install toolkits into LV 8.0 DS-PCE when 7.1 version is still installed

Hi,

I am currently trying to upgrade from 7.1 to 8.0 (Development System-Professional Control Edition)
from the November '05 SSP release. As I have a very large investment in 7.1 development, my plan
has been to install the 8.0 system beside the 7.1 system,  copy all of my developed source into a
new directory and start trying to turn it on. This hopefully  leaves an intact LV7.1 system until the code
is safely running in 8.0

The first problem I run into: when I attempt to install the various toolkits, (in particular the internet
toolkit and the report...office toolkits) the installer doesn't install into the LV8.0 environment; opening
my application VI in the 8.0 system results in missing report generation VIs and FTP vis which (in the
7.1 environment) are found in vi.lib\addons\internet and vi.lib\addons\_office. These directories are
missing in the 8.0 vi.lib; copying them over from the 7.1 directory fixes this problem but leaves me
uneasy as to what other problems I might be causing.

What is the correct way to install the toolits in such a dual-version system?

Regards,

Bob

Hi Bob

That is exactly the same problem I run into when I installed LV8.
The most difficult problem is the report generation toolkit, which needs to be installed after the previous version is gone.

The first time I installed report generation toolkit it did install, but without all sorts of vis. After I uninstalled the one from LV7.1 it installed properly. But here again, when I opened the old applications I had whole pile of missing vis. Going through the projects and fixing the stuff is not what I wanted, it will take week. So what I did is I simply coppied to OLV7.1 directory the old backup files from /vi/lib/addons/_office and the one from /utilities/_office_stuff  or something like that and for now it seems to work. The LV7.1 has old report generation toolkit and the LV8 has a new one.

What I am afraid of is that in one point of time I will run into some incompatybilities, but I will be worrying when it happens.

I just realized that the amount of spelling mistakes makes my post totally not understandable, so I write again:

Here is what I did:

I copied to old backup files from LV7.1 the "\National Instruments\LabVIEW 7.1\vi.lib\addons\_office" and the one from " National Instruments\LabVIEW 7.1\vi.lib\Utility" and for now it seems to work.

The LV7.1 has old report generation toolkit and the LV8 has a new one.

cheers

Thanks! I am in the process of trying something like this (I need to now obtain the
7.1 vi.lib files from another installation because I followed the NI instructions and uninstalled
the toolkits and reinstalled and now have no toolkit files in the 7.1 directory |-\ )

I have also noticed that my 7.1 install is now unstable (panic crashes, etc.) Something was
apparently corrupted by the 8.0 install. I'm afraid its going to be a looong winter night!!

Other problems I am discovering I will post under their own topics...

You are right, there is always a risk with such an opertions. Fortunatelly mine instalation works fine. Reinstalling all this stuff will take few days.

good luck

Well, hand-patching didn't work!. My application in 7.1 is broken because it is linking to the
"standard" report generation VIs. The same application in 8.0 compiles correctly but
can't be used because the datalog file format has changed (not documented in the
upgrade notes).  Rolling everything to work with the new datalog format will be a delicate
process with little ability to turn on and debug components one by one.

I don't know what to do now. I generated a phone request to NI but gave up after
45 minutes on hold. I may have to uninstall and rebuild *both* the LV7.1 and LV8.0
systems...with no guarantee I won't end up right back here with the same mess. I'm
tempted to put 8.0 back in the shipping box.

Apologies for the rant...hasn't been a very productive morning...little prospect for
improvement...

Hi,

On teh LV8 launch day the NI people told that not every toolkit is yet available for LV8. Smiley Sad  So if you install a toolkit and it installs in the LV7 dir it is a 'old' toolkit.
LV7.1 and LV8 run wel together on one machine.
Maybe this explains something.

Hello all,

The toolkit installation into multiple versions ao LabVIEW ahs been a problem for a while now. I was hoping they would fix the installers with LV 8, but it looks like it slipped though again. Smiley Mad

I went through the toolkit and made a document that describes all the files that need to be manually copied from one LV installation to the others so you can have the toolkits in multiple versions. I have not yet updated this for LV 8 because we just got our software pack last week and I just haven't had time. But it should be pretty complete.

You can download the document from the LAVA forums here.

Please let me know if you run into any problems with missing VIs. Those will be the first toolkits I look at.

Hi Bob

I am sorry to hear that. It is a real pitty that it turned out this way.
I am still surprised that you could not make it work though.
When I installed the first time new toolkit it istalled itself in LV8 directory, so there was no way that the old LV7.1 could see this path. Therefore, the only problems was the missing vis from the old installation. After manual copy all was OK. I did not however save my old vi in LV8.

Thanks, Ed.  Your documentation will be invaluable when I attempt to tackle the
problem again.

I have been off-line for the holidays; just me and my LV notebook in the
mountains of Colorado (yeah, I know, tough life) I finally got all the vi's that my
application was missing/incorrectly linking  copied manually back into the 7.1 vi.lib.
So I can now compile and build my host application in 7.1 again.

Unfortunately, I can no longer point the execution target to the fieldpoint and run
the RT application (LV7.1 crashes every time). This is not a toolkit problem, it seems
to be either a real-time or DSC module problem. Fortunately, I had not installed
LV8.0 on my "work" computer, only my "home" one, so I can copy the RT application
to that computer, run, debug and build the RT object from there. It means I have to
debug code standing in front of a PC up on a shelf in a cold water plant instead of
sitting at my kitchen table sipping earl grey, but. oy vey...I can make progress again.

I will post a new thread when I start trying to tackle the 8.0 port again, assuming I run
into undiscussed problems.

Thanks!

Bob
