My guess is that you are not doing it exactly the same way as i describe...if you already have the palette set to transparent and just try to click on the border nothing happens...
However if you right-click on the border, then select T and then hit space...you will succeed. Here is a video of it (keyboard strokes excluded...):

Have a look at the two modern control in the attached VI's.
The ones on the left are the same as the ones on the right.
The ones on the right are transparent.
The trick with the edges is to right click over the edge with the brush (paint tool) and then use Tab (on keyboard) to select the color box (the one on the left) and then hover over the T (transparent) color selection (top right).

After making string control transparent, If i click inside the control the background of the string is coming in white. How to make complete transparent
