Well, what GerdW noted explains it. I had actually tried a variety of HTML codes. I hadn't used <b>, as I had used the more modern <strong> tag. I didn't see it properly formatted, and concluded it wasn't really handling HTML code in the error source string. The correct conclusion should have been that it only handles the <b> code. Whether or not that's considered as "handling" HTML markup I won't make a conclusion. It's simply what it is.
