How to upgrade VIs from 3.1 to 6

Hi all!

I'm trying to open my LabVIEW 3.1 VIs in LabVIEW 6. I get the error:
"LabVIEW load error code 10: Version of VI is too old to convert to
current LabVIEW version."
How do I upgrade my VIs from LabVIEW 3.1 to LabVIEW 6?

Thanks for your help,
Juergen

NI offers a free(?) tool to do this.
Go to www.ni.com/ask and ask for it. Without this tool, the lowest
version 6i can load is 4.x.

Does NI also provide a tool to go back from 6i to 4? (Or perhaps 5.1 to 4?)
One of my relations is still using 4.0 !!

Hi Jürgen,

I tried to upgrade from LabView 3.1 for Mac to 5.0 for Labview Winxx PC, this
works fine, no errors while opening VIs.
So try to borrow a Ver. 5 ??

Hope this helps,
Rolf

I think I saw the conversion tool on the LabVIEW6 CD.

I checked my 6i CD and didn't find it there... Is it online anywhere? I can't seem to find it on the download section.

To convert from 3.1 to 6.x, you need to order a free conversion utility from National Instruments. Click here for more info.
LabView 6.x includes an automatic conversion when you load a VI created with a previous version, bit that only works back to 4.0. The good news is that you can get the 3.1 converter free.

Hi,
I am trying to upgrade a vi from version 3 to 6 and am trying to follow this thread. I hope it's not too stale, but the link mentioned is dead.

I do have a "VI Conversion Package" that says "From 2x or 3x to 6I". However when I try to run it I get a <500k disk msg that is erroneous. Also when I look at the notes, it looks to be old and there is nothing about newer version and file dates are old.

Anybody throw me a bone here?

Thanks,
Steve D.

I don't know what the "VI Conversion Package" is, but look at this link, then order the free "LabVIEW VI Conversion Kit" (part number 776874-03) from your local NI sales representative.
http://digital.ni.com/public.nsf/3efedde4322fef19862567740067f3cc/429e45271cfd683786256d87006b1eef?OpenDocument
If that doesn't work, it's possible that there's a bug in the program on checking the free disk space. Then you'd need to check with NI.

Hope this is a good bone, I’m throwing.

Your package labelling is just like the one I use for LV2.2 Mac to LV6i. The file dates are old because you basically have early/mid 90’s versions of LabVIEW on your CD.

The problem is that GB drives weren’t prevalent back then and I think LabVIEW miscalculates what your real free space is.

Try this:

- Copy the conversion folders (lv311, lv401) to your HD.

- make sure the labview.ini file in both copied folders is not set to ‘Read Only’ (I had to change the one in \lv401).

- add the following to the labview.ini file for both versions: checkAvailDiskSpace=False

Hope it works.
