Somehow, my icon editor has gotten corrupted such that the text it places on icons seems to have a shadow or halo around it. How can I undo this and have simple, plain text?

It appears you are using an anti-aliased font (such as Times New Roman). Under Windows, use Small Fonts as your font and you should be good.
