In-circuit Functional tester using labView

Yes, I am real new to LabView. I am reading a book and going through
some tutorials but it will be awhile before I can do anything
complex. I really have one main goal. To somehow build a bench top In-
Circuit Functional Tester to help troubleshoot embedded controller
boards of different designs, manufactures and complexity. Does anyone
know what the basic building blocks are needed for a device like
this? I know I need a lot of digital IOs and a way to backdrive some
pins. A V-I tester like a Huntron. Logic analyzer. Has anyone seen a
completed one using labview and PXI or VXI stuff? Does anyone have
any experience building something like this. I am willing to pay for
someone with experience to help get me started. This doesn't have to
be a beast like the Gen Rad stuff. I will be using clips and some
unique VIs. Looking for around 250 pins max.

Thanks
Uriah

Sounds like you are already off to a good start!  Hopefully the boards you are testing support boundary scan for their digital compoents?  If so, it is definitly worth the cost of a Scan Controller and software.  On a properly designed board, you can completely test all your digital components over a cable with just 4 pins!  (I've heard that newer versions of boundary scan also enable some analog testing as well.)
