Instrument assist nor DAQmx assist works for USB cRIO-9215 in LabView 7.1.1

I have a new USB 9161 carrier connected to a cRIO-9215 which in turn is connected to an analog voltage input.  The USB connects to a new computer to which I installed LabView 7.1.1 student version and the DAQmx base 1.4 driver version that came with the hardware.  MAX sees the device, but the VISA session gives me codes like BFFF0078.  When I 'create new' under Devices and interfaces, it does not give me the USB as a choice (even though the USB device is listed under the devices).
I also tried to get things running in LabView 7.1.1.  The DAQ assistant does not show up on the Functions->Input pallets.  The Instrument I/O assistant tells me that MAX or the instrument I/O assistant are not installed properly.  After downloading the Instrument I/O assistant 1.0.1 (the only one I could find online) from NI support, it tells me that this doesn't work because I need to install LabView prior to the instrument I/O assistant.  I have uninstalled and reinstalled everything a number of times in the correct order, but without any success.
Any ideas on what to try?

Hello Bash,

The DAQmx Base driver uses the DAQmx Base Task Configuration Utility and Lsdaq (C:\Program Files\National Instruments\NI-DAQmx Base\apps) instead of MAX. Also, the DAQ Assistant comes with DAQmx, not DAQmx Base. Instead of the DAQ Assistant, there are some great example programs that use DAQmx Base found at C:\Program Files\National Instruments\NI-DAQmx Base\Examples. If you are interested in using MAX and the DAQ Assistant, you will need to purchase the upgrade kit at Contact NI. Have a great day!

Sincerely,

Marni S.
