Interactive picture control/indicators

I am currently designing a front panel that draws a floor plan of an instrument we are controling with LabVIEW.  The individual components of the instrument are drawn into a picture indicator and their colors change according to various different states (warnings, interlocks, etc.)  I want to know if it is possible to use event programming to make these drawings within the picture interactive controls as well as indicators.  Can I reference an event to an individual component in the picture indicator, or do I have to work within the picture's coordinate system (the latter would be more tedious and probably result in me re-thinking this approach).

Sorry for the cross posting, but I also posted a similar question on an old topic from 2003:

See this thread for all kinds of picture control usage.
