If not then could anyone suggest a way around this, maybe in the SQL server set-up or ODBC?

Phil,
In the SQL toolkit you have the following vi's :
Set Login Timeout; Get Login Timeout
Set Query Timeout; Get Query Timeout
These are under the configuration palette of the SQL toolkit.
